As part of the national Local Democracy Week initiative to bring together elected politicians with younger generations, Conservative councillors are visiting various schools in the borough over the next few days. Throughout Local Democracy Week 2015, which runs from 12 to 18 October, Conservatives in Merton will be talking to young people about their role and the services and democratic functions of the council.
Conservative Community Engagement Spokesman, Councillor David Williams, who will be visiting Benedict Primary Academy, said:
"My Conservative colleagues and I are very much looking forward to visiting local schools and speaking to pupils. The views of young people are important. By learning more about the issues they care about, we will be able to better represent all Merton residents whatever their age.
"Research continues to suggest that only one in three young people nationally have met a councillor or MP. Merton Conservatives are keen to change this and that's why we are out and about meeting pupils of all ages."
