Stop Labour's plans to take away the Winter Fuel Allowance

The recent announcement by the Labour government that the Winter Fuel Allowance will be means tested this winter will have a catastrophic effect on more than nine million pensioners, many of whom will now be unable to keep warm during the cold weather. According to the latest government statistics there are over 25,000 recipients of the Winter Fuel Allowance in Merton.

No notice was given by the Labour Party regarding this change of policy which was not in the Labour manifesto. Previous research, carried out by the Labour Party, showed that cutting the Winter Fuel Allowance could lead to almost 4,000 pensioner deaths. The Labour government is also seeking to avoid parliamentary scrutiny on this dramatic change in policy.

The Conservative Party in Merton is calling for the Labour government to drop their plans to means test the Winter Fuel Allowance. We are also calling upon Labour run Merton Council to commit to providing equal financial support to pensioners to ensure that no pensioners in Merton suffer due to the actions of the Labour government.

We the undersigned, call upon Merton Council to provide financial support to those pensioners who are due to lose their Winter Fuel Allowance due to the actions of the Labour government in Westminster.
