Tweet Village AELTC petition Current Protect our parkland. Your details Leave this field blank When Merton Council sold the freehold of Wimbledon Park Golf Club to the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) in 1993, both parties promised the land would not be built on. A legally enforceable covenant was put in place to formalise this agreement. With the AELTC’s plans for 38 new tennis courts and an 8,000 seater stadium, the covenant and the land it protects are at risk. The plans will mean years of development to have the courts ready for the 2028 Championships. The Labour administration must not break its promise to protect this land from development by the AELTC. Yet residents tell local Councillors they believe that Merton Labour cannot be trusted to deal with this matter transparently and in accordance with due process. We the undersigned therefore call upon Merton Council to uphold and enforce the legal covenant which protects this land. I wish to add my name to this petition.
