Conservative Councillors launch Local Democracy Week in Merton’s schools
Merton Conservatives have helped to launch Local Democracy Week in the boroughs schools. Local Democracy Week helps to introduce children to the democratic process and allows them to learn more about local government and the role of a councillor. In addition to visiting local schools Merton Conservative councillors have taken part in a scrutiny exercise with members of the Youth Parliament.
Councillor Oonagh Moulton, Conservative Group Leader, said:
"I was pleased to visit Merton Abbey School and meet their Year 4 Class, Local Democracy Week is such an important way of teaching children about the democratic process. I was impressed by how engaged the pupils were, and it was fantastic to be able to tell them about my experiences on Merton Council and answer their questions."
Councillor Edward Gretton, Shadow Cabinet Member for Children, Youth and Education, said:
"I was impressed by the members of the Youth Parliament who took part in Merton Council’s scrutiny exercise. The Youth Parliament members really engaged with the question of ‘what is Merton doing to keep our young people safe?’, and it was clear that Youth Parliament members got a real insight into how scrutiny works."
