As part of the national Local Democracy Week initiative to bring together elected politicians with younger generations, Conservative councillors are visiting various schools in the borough over the next few days. Throughout Local Democracy Week 2017, which this year runs from 9 to 15 October, Conservatives in Merton will be talking to young people about their role and the services and democratic functions of the council.
Leader of Merton Conservative Group, Councillor Oonagh Moulton, said:
"Local Conservative politicians are very much looking forward to visiting Merton’s schools and speaking to pupils about our role. Meeting elected representatives in person really helps young people understand more about how our country’s democracy works.
"Studies suggest that only one in three young people nationally have ever met a councillor or MP. Merton Conservatives are keen to change this. Listening to the views of local schoolchildren also means we are better able to represent all of the borough’s residents, whatever their age."
