The new Wimbledon Village High Street Group has announced a number of exciting plans to help enhance the area for local residents and businesses. Chaired by Cllr Najeeb Latif, the Group has recently also entered into discussions with the world famous All England Club (AELTC) about working together to deliver improvements to one of the most easily recognisable parts of the borough.
The Village High Street Group’s committee includes representatives of the Wimbledon Society, Wimbledon and Putney Common Conservators, Wimbledon Village Business Association (WVBA) and local residents’ associations. Dedicated to securing the future of this internationally significant area for generations to come, it very much embodies the Government’s goal of empowering local people and communities to make the improvements and changes that their areas really need.
Initiatives include a Wimbledon Village events calendar to publicise the multitude of events held in the Village, and a Walk of Fame with plaques set in the High Street pavement to celebrate winners of the nearby tennis championships held each summer.
The Group is also supporting WVBA’s proposal to seek BID status for Wimbledon Village and, with the assistance of Cllr Latif, they have now secured initial funding from Merton Council for a feasibility study.
Councillor Najeeb Latif, Wimbledon Village ward councillor and Chairman of the Village High Street Group, said:
“Like all towns and villages, Wimbledon Village high street is facing increased challenges from neighbouring regeneration at a time of constrained budgets. Key organisations such as the Wimbledon Society and residents’ associations are dedicated to improving the experience for local residents, but we recognise that we cannot achieve this alone.
“This Group is the vital link in bringing together key organisations to achieve the common goal of improving Wimbledon Village now and for the future.”
