Bringing Local Democracy to Merton’s Schools
As part of the national Local Democracy Week initiative to bring together elected politicians with younger generations, Conservative councillors have been visiting various schools in the borough. Throughout Local Democracy Week 2016, which this year runs from 10 to 16 October, Conservatives in Merton have been busy talking to young people about their role and the services and democratic functions of the council.
Leader of Merton Conservative Group, Councillor Oonagh Moulton, visited Benedict Primary School yesterday (13 October) and said afterwards:
“Meeting elected representatives in person really helps young people understand more about how our country’s democracy works. It has therefore been a pleasure to visit local schools this week and speak to pupils about our role as councillors.
“Listening to the views of young people and discussing the issues they care about also enables me and my colleagues to better represent Merton residents of all ages.”
Schools in the Borough which have taken advantage of the offer by local Conservative councillors to come in and speak to their pupils include:
- Hollymount Primary School (Cllr Stephen Crowe)
- Raynes Park High School (Cllr Adam Bush)
- Benedict Primary School (Cllr Oonagh Moulton)
- The Hall School, Wimbledon (TBC)
- Aragon Primary School – AGM of Merton Children’s Council (Cllr Linda Taylor)
