Merton Conservatives have called an Extraordinary Council meeting for 6th February to hold Labour to account about their decision to appoint Veolia. For months the council has tried to ignore and frustrate all attempts to discuss the performance of Veolia, it is time for them to own up and be honest with local residents. The unwanted wheelie bin roll out was a disaster, Veolia has failed to keep the streets clean, thousands of collections of rubbish and recycling have been missed, and Veolia have left huge mountains of waste piled up in our streets.
We want Merton Council to activate the ‘step in’ clauses in the contract, this means that a private contractor would be hired to clean the streets, with the money being deducted from the payment to Veolia. We want an honest answer about how much money Merton Council have fined Veolia, and we are recommending that the Council Leader and the Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Cleanliness forfeit their special responsibility allowances until the Annual Council meeting on 15th May.
